Delegation is an age-old topic – the art of getting things done with and through others. But it seems to be getting more and more complicated in this agile world where massive amounts of data and endless opportunities exist. How do an organization and the individuals within manage priorities and commitments when everyone is constantly over-capacity? Most organizations get their teams lined up for the year, with full plates and ambitious objectives, and then expect them to keep all plates spinning when new initiatives pop up, and nothing can be dropped. There’s a tendency not to allow for extra resources, and an expectation that everything should get done. Many times, “just figure it out” is the guidance given. This wears people out, pushes them out, and negatively impacts the quality of results. Leaders need to know how to delegate effectively and, more importantly, to recognize capacity issues, establish priorities, and manage “up” as well as down to set healthy expectations. It’s an art, and it takes special leadership skills to do this.
